What is a Chaffle?
Chaffles are delicious, crispy keto-friendly waffles made with two simple ingredients: cheese and eggs.
They: Look like a waffle and taste like a waffle
Have the mouthfeel (crispy on the outside, soft on the inside) of a waffle. The base Chaffle recipe can be perfected and modified in many different ways.
What Does “Chaffle” Mean?
Chaffle = Cheese + Waffle!- Technically, Chaffles are Cheese + Egg.
What Appliance Do You Use to Make a Chaffle?
The answer to this is “a waffle maker,” but there is a particular type of waffle maker that many ketoers are using: it is called the Dash Mini Waffle Maker. You can purchase it through Amazon, find at Homegoods, Kohls, Target etc….Alternatively, you can use another size waffle maker as well.
Pros of the Dash Mini Waffle Maker for Making Chaffles
It makes perfect Eggo-like Chaffles, one at a time. It’s easy to store in your kitchen because it is so tiny. Many ketoers are using it, making it easy to replicate the results of their Chaffle recipes they find. It also makes the perfect gift. Ketoers and non-ketoers alike will love getting this for a gift! I already have given a few of these as gifts and prizes in my Free KETO Group .
Cons of the Dash Mini Waffle Maker
It only makes one Chaffle at a time. They cook quickly, but if you’re making Chaffles for a family or want more than one quick, it can be a long process. There is not a timer. When the machine is warmed up, the blue light on top turns off so you know when to add your batter. However, once you’ve added the batter, the machine itself doesn’t have any way to tell you when it’s done; you have to set a separate timer or check it visually.
You have to pour carefully.Since it’s such a small machine, it fills up quickly and to much as spill and cook on the sides of your Dash Waffle maker. You have to spoon on the Chaffle mix carefully so you don’t overfill it or it leaks everywhere. (Tip: Put a baking sheet under your waffle maker in case of overfill.)
How to Make a Basic Chaffle: + Recipe- So easy! (this is for the Mini Dash Waffle Maker)
1 egg
1/2 cup shredded cheese (here is where you can get really creative with different types of cheese)
Cooking spray like ghee, coconut oil or olive oil.
(You can also add a little vanilla also to the mixture to cut down on the egg taste if that is your preference.
Instructions:
Turn waffle maker on or plug it in so that it heats and grease both sides of waffle maker.
In a small bowl, crack an egg then add the 1/2 cup cheddar cheese and stir to combine.
Pour 1/2 of the batter in the waffle maker and close the top.
Cook for 3-4 minutes or until it reaches desired doneness.
Carefully remove from waffle maker and set aside for 2-3 minutes to give it time to crisp
Follow the instructions again to make the second chaffles. There are multiple techniques out there. Some people mix the shredded cheese in entirely with the egg, some mix in only half of the shredded cheese and use the rest on the top and bottom of the batter to make it crispier on the outside, etc. (I like mine crispy so I do this)
It takes about 3-4 minutes for each chaffle to get golden brown. You will need to check as there is not timer on the waffle maker. At first, they feel soft, but they will crisp once you remove them from the waffle maker. A tip for you when the Chaffle is done put in on a baking cooling rack to cool so the bottom stays crispy The Chaffle will begin to crisp in just a few minutes.
